Hồ Minh Dĩ, the Vietnam U19’s talented dwarf

A successor of Thành Lương is a player of modest height on the Vietnam U19 team, but that player is instrumental to the playing style devised by Coach Hoàng Anh Tuấn.

His score at the match against UAE is indicative of this midfielder’s best qualities. In the team, Minh Dĩ and Lương Hoàng Nam are considered dwarfs due to their height of less than 1.6m. They are much shorter than Bùi Tiến Dụng, Nguyễn Trọng Đại and Nguyễn Tiến Linh. Instead, the two possess great agility, speed, good techniques and the ability to create sudden changes.

“Despite the lack of an ideal physique, Minh Dĩ always gives it his best shots on the pitch. We highly appreciate his skills, ranging from controlling, passing and shooting the ball. He’s capable of sudden changes with a mere pass, which is his specialty,” Hữu ĐangNguyễn Hữu Đang, a coach of the Promotion Fund for Vietnamese Football Talent- PVF, shared.

The footballer from Quảng Trị is one of the gems at PVF. PVF held the recruitment there in 2009. Infatuated with football, Minh Dĩ insisted his father allow him to take the recruitment tests. The boy, who was merely 1.31 m in height and 27 kg in weight, had an inferiority complex being laughed at by many knowing he was going to take the tests.

However, after taking the demanding tests, he was retained and sent to HCMC for the final selection round. During the two following months, the boy from Quảng Trị had to contend with 150 others from across the country. After the rigorous training and testing process, he was officially enlisted in PVF, ready for a new journey in his life.

Minh Dĩ’s talent is nourished and developed at the incubator known for its many “super” coaches, who are former star players in Vietnam football such as Nguyên Chương, Hữu Đang, Mạnh Cường, Việt Thắng and Quang Trãi.

Compared to other training centers, the PVF young batches are blessed with more opportunities to compete in many countries, such as Japan, Malaysia and Italy. Experiencing different competing styles have been of great help to these young players.

Few know that Minh Dĩ is a member of the PVF incubator team who defeated the Lazio U18 in early 2015. His then teammates are now donning the jerseys of the Vietnam U19, such as Hà Đức Chinh, Mạc Đức Việt Anh and Bùi Tiến Dụng.

Similarities in playing styles and early access to state-of-the-art strategies are among the principal reasons behind the PVF players being trusted with important tasks by Coach Hoàng Anh Tuấn. Over the past two years, Minh Dĩ is almost indispensable in this strategist’s line-up.

There remains a long road ahead for Hồ Minh Dĩ to challenge himself at a higher level. Compared to many of his contemporaries, he has yet to have opportunities to shine at the V.League. However, with his determination and qualities, the midfielder with a skillful left leg promises to advance much further, just as what his idol Phạm Thanh Lương did.
