After convincingly defeating U19 Hoang Anh Gia Lai 1 2-0 in the final with 2 goals from Nguyen Hoang Huy and Ly Trung Hieu, U19 PVF became the champion of the National U19 tournament 2020. This is the second time that this team has climbed to the top of the tournament, after the first champion in 2015. More importantly, for the first time, the curse “home team” which had lasted for 20 years was broken by U19 PVF.
20 years before this year’s tournament, no home team could climb on the top of the Nation U19 tournament. The last time a home team was able to do it was in 2000 when U19 Ha Tinh defeated U19 Nam Dinh with a score of 3-0 in the final match.
From that moment, the home teams did not succeed in this tournament and failed to win the championship. Many teams cannot even finish the group stage, even if they have the home advantage. The best achievement of a home teams in the past 20 years is only the second prize of the tournaments taking place in 2005 (U19 Ho Chi Minh City), 2009 (U19 Hoang Anh Gia Lai), 2012 (U19 SHB. Da Nang), 2019 (U19 Hoang Anh Gia Lai).

Meanwhile, it’s the third time in the history that U19 Hoang Anh Gia Lai has made it to the final game of the tournament. However, just like the two previous times, the young players of “Mountain City” club, althought appreciated, ended up collapsing right before the “threshold of paradise”.
In 2009, when the national U19 finals were held on Hoang Anh Gia Lai stadium, the young players of “Mountain City” had no difficulty to reach the final. However, against U19 Viettel in the final match, U19 Hoang Anh Gia Lai was unable to score in the 90 minutes of the official game and then had to accept to be defeated with a score of 3- 4 on the penalties 11m and had to watch the opponent win the championship of the tournament in their home stadium.

Ten years later, the history is repeated. U19 Hoang Anh Gia Lai, after winning the semi-finals, faces U19 Hanoi in the final. Despite the home advantage, the young players of “Mountain City” could not make a surprise and had to accept to lose the match with the score of 0-1 and once again missed the championship trophy.
The defeat of Guillaurne Graechen and his students this year helped the “Mountain City” team complete the second-prize-hat-trick in the final match of the national U19 tournament. A sad achievement.
